Positive: The apartment and neighborhood were genuinely nice. We had a lovely week in Paris.

Negative: We booked this apartment a few months in advance and paid the full amount upfront, as requested. On the day of arrival, while we were already at the airport, the host messaged asking for our ETA and casually mentioned in half a sentence that we needed to pay a €200 deposit. There was no mention of any deposit in the booking — the only related note stated: "If you cause damage to the property during your stay, you could be asked to pay up to EUR 300 after check-out, according to this property's Damage Policy." No upfront deposit, no link, no instructions. I assumed it was a mistake, especially since charging anything not clearly stated in the booking goes against Booking.com policy. The host's husband arrived (a bit late) to let us in. He was friendly, the apartment was lovely, and the location was great. But before leaving, he insisted on the €200 deposit. I explained that this wasn't part of our agreement and that a half-sentence WhatsApp message after full payment didn't feel fair. He called his wife, who also insisted. She wanted the money via PayPal. I don't have PayPal, so my partner had to send it. Since neither of us had used PayPal to send money via phone number before, we sent a €5 test first. Only then did the host mention we needed to select the "friends and family" option — too late, we'd already lost €0.50 in fees. We sent the remaining €195 correctly, so she received €199.50. After our departure, she refunded exactly €199.50 — deducting the €0.50 that was lost because of her own failure to give clear instructions upfront. We're used to paying deposits; that wasn't the issue. The issue was the complete lack of transparency and the pettiness of withholding €0.50 over a mistake she caused. A real shame, because the apartment and neighborhood were genuinely nice. We had a lovely week in Paris, but I wouldn't book here again.
